We know that how we eat and how we exercise determines what we weigh, but does how we sleep also add pounds? Today the Florida Lung Doctors bring you news that actually began in 1879,when electric lighting gave us a new kind of flexibility. Mankind could choose how to schedule work, play and sleep.

Basic to understanding her recent sleep study, Dr. Cathy Wyse wrote,“Daily or “circadian” rhythms including the sleep wake cycle, and rhythms in hormone release are controlled by a molecular clock that is present in every cell of the human body.”

Interestingly, the clock inside you has a default rhythm of 24 hours, uniting it in nature with the rotation of the earth. This finely tuned human clock is disrupted by exposure to artificial light. An inevitable part of 21st century life is our irregular meal, work and sleep cycles. “This mismatch between the natural circadian rhythms of our bodies and the environment is called circadian desynchrony.”

Dr. Cathy Wyse, of the University of Aberdeen has published studies which show us that,”The human clock struggles to remain tuned to our highly irregular lifestyles.”

In her study, she deduced that this struggle predicates metabolic and other health problems, and makes us more likely to become obese.”

She added, “Studies in microbes, plants and animals have shown that synchronization of the internal clock with environmental rhythms is important for health and survival, and it is highly likely that this is true in humans as well.”

This study is significant enough that the Florida Lung Doctors advocate an effort to maintain healthy circadian rhythms for your physical vigor. We advise:

1. Keep regular meal times.

2. Maintain night time sleep in complete darkness, and without interruptions.

3. Make certain you absorb plenty of sunlight during daylight hours.

Dr. Wyse’s research shows that circadian desynchrony affects human health. Systems in the brain that regulate metabolism are disrupted, and this leads to obesity and diabetes.

“Our 24-hour society has come at the high price of circadian desynchrony,” concluded Wyse. “There are many factors driving mankind towards obesity but disrupted circadian rhythms should be considered alongside the usual suspects of diet and exercise.”

Sleep studies are continuously happening all over the globe. For example, you can learn about the dangers of reading your led lit tablet in bed before sleeping here. Likewise, you could study the research concerning fathers who cuddle and snooze with their babies. Undoubtedly, studies like these will refine, adjust or validate Dr. Cathy Wyse’s findings. Here in Orlando, the Florida Lung Doctors like their “Sigma” approach for patient care. The London Sleep Center’s “Sigma” methodology combines the application of science, medicine, psychology, social and holistic methods. This philosophy of individual treatment compares very well with our vision at Florida Lung, Asthma and Sleep Specialists. Likewise, we say that “we believe in a patient oriented and holistic approach to health-care while addressing our patients’ specific needs in the fields of pulmonary disorders and sleep medicine.” Please see our homepage for more details of our mission. We know that in mathematics, the sigma symbol, “Σ,” represents the sum of several parts, so it seems an appropriate symbol to crystallize a philosophy which merges, mind, body and soul.

This philosophy of individuality compares very well with our vision at Florida Lung, Asthma and Sleep Specialists. We believe in a “patient oriented and holistic approach to healthcare while addressing our patients’ specific needs in the fields of pulmonary disorders and sleep medicine.” Please click on our  homepage for more details of our mission.

Thank you for reading our blog about new sleep research this week. Our next blog brings you a few hints if you find it difficult to catch some z’ s, whether you are “sleepless in Seattle,” or Florida, or your Hometown, USA.
