As you read the title of this blog, you might wonder why “Turquoise” was mentioned. The Florida Lung, Asthma and Sleep Specialists will resolve that question in this blog.
Did you know that a US woman dies every 8 minutes, due to lung cancer? That statistic is the primary reason for the American Lung Association’s campaign to support the fight against it.
Another little known fact is that lung cancer is now the number one cancer killer of women. Yet, sadly, in recent surveys, only one percent of women say that lung cancer is a health concern. Clearly, FLASS feels like we need some advocacy, education and awareness of the huge effect of lung cancer on our wives, daughters, sisters, aunts and mothers.
That’s why the second week of May has been dedicated to lung cancer awareness by the American Lung Association. The color for fighting woman’s lung cancer is turquoise, which is why you might see bright turquoise lights on some women’s health institutions, and turquoise ribbons adorning the lapels and collars of concerned citizens.
Be a Lung Force Hero
It is especially fitting that they have chosen the second week in May for this campaign, since it overlaps Mother’s day and National Women’s Lung Health Week.
If you are a woman and you or some one you love have endured a lung cancer experience, share your story at lungforce.org, and read about the other women who have endured or are living with, this disease. You will notice the brilliant turquoise accents on the page.
Remember, sharing your story can encourage and enlighten others so they will get help and not disregard their symptoms as a normal part “getting old” or constant low grade flu.
