Lung research will soon get a new life.  The latest upcoming research will focus on “the first-ever longitudinal lung study…” The study follows”4,000 healthy individuals between the ages of 25 and 35.”

Lung Research:  A Deep Dive into Lung Disease Development

Lung Research on Healthy Individuals Offers Hope For Patient's New Treatments.

Lung Research Is On The Rise. And Most Importantly, Scientists Are Solving the Mysteries of Major Lung Diseases.

The researchers follow two main objectives:

  • They want to learn the secrets to preventing lung disease.
  • Once they know the secrets of prevention, they will be better equipped to find cures for the lung diseases of our time.

Why is this New Study Critically Important?

You see, experts tell us “Little is currently known about the evolution of lung disease…”  Likewise, little is understood about “how a young, healthy adult’s lung function changes over time.”

At Florida Lung, Asthma, and Sleep Specialists, we are proud that the American Lung Association won this research study through a grant from the National, Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.  lung disease

Research and Practical Care:  2 Sides of 1 Coin

We have long advocated the close association between research and practical care.  With this research, your doctor will have a better concept of your lung health as the years progress.

This lung health study of 4,000 healthy individuals ages 25 to 35, will empower a new generation to be aware of early detection. Look out, lung diseases! This could lead to weapons that wipe out lung cancer, COPD, asthma, and more.

Many Mysteries of Lung Disease to Be Solved

Lung Research Study Involves Both Medical and Educational Institutions.

The American Lung Society Cohort Report Incorporates Millennium Participants Over a Period of Years.

Many pulmonologists are dismayed because their patients do not come to them soon enough to be treated effectively. They lose their lives or their quality of life because doctors don’t know enough about the progress of the disease in healthy lungs as a person ages.

Anticipating the progress of a disease can be the beginning of its defeat.  Dr. Ravi Kalhan is the Northwestern Medicine Pulmonologist and Study Principal Investigator.

He recently stated, “Our aim is to intercept chronic lung disease before it becomes clinically apparent…”  And he added, “We think that millennials are the generation to focus on.”

Where Do We Find Lung Research Happening?

As we mentioned, the Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute funded this research project.  However, they are not the only ones who will be participating in this great research enterprise.

The American Lung Association Lung Health Cohort Study is also “in partnership with Northwestern University and Johns Hopkins University.  Thus we must comment that all the best research minds in medicine are delighted with this federally funded U.S. longitudinal study of millennium lungs.

More Details About New Lung Research For Healthy Lungs

Millennials With Healthy Lungs Might Hold the Key to Early Detection of Cancer, COPD, And Other Lung Diseases.

Sites for the study crisscross the United States. Such sites as research facilities at the institutions listed below will add prestige as well as geographic positions to the study.

They include Baylor College of Medicine, Brigham Health, Columbia University, Cornell University, Medical University of South Carolina, National Jewish Health, and many more.  Check this online resource for the complete list.

Initially, the researchers will enroll 4,000 young and healthy adults.  Additionally, they must be from 25 to 35 years old.

Millennial Lung Research Objectives

The roadmap of objectives for this study has been carefully planned.

  • Firstly, the researcher determines exposures that can be modified to make or keep lungs healthy.
  • Within a large study of 4,000, scientists calculate risk factors. They check on lower lung function and clarify the “burden of respiratory symptoms in young adults.”
  • Researchers measure small airways and assess the impact of lung injury.
  • Small airways and injuries are often found in patients with lower lung function.
  • Moreover, they already know that “Nasal cells and selected blood biomarkers are differentially associated with CT-measured small airways and lung injury in young adults.”
  • Finally, Researchers put together the pieces of the lung disease puzzle with this study.

Watch the News for New Lung Research

Does anyone remember a time when we did not know much about cholesterol?  It was this type of multi-year study that revealed the mysteries of cholesterol and lead to advanced treatment for cardiovascular health.

Lung doctors everywhere are hoping that this study will help push pulmonary medicine to a new level, comparable to those discoveries.

To put it more expertly, we hope this study “will help shift pulmonary medicine from reactive treatment to preventive lung health care.”

Those Who Participate in The Lung Cohort Study:  Heroes

Are you feeling like a lung study superhero?  Qualifications are very simple:

  • Firstly, you must be 25 to 35 years old at the time of the examination.
  • Languages required include English or Spanish.
  • The researchers will need your social security number.
However, the researchers will not accept applicants with certain conditions:
  • Has your doctor diagnosed you with severe asthma, chronic lung disease, or cardiovascular disease?  If you have a “history of cancer other than non-melanoma skin cancer,” you cannot participate.
  • And finally, participants cannot be currently pregnant.

Terrific Take Aways from Lung Research

Analyzing the Healthy Lungs of 4,000 Individuals May Offer Hope to Lung Disease Patients.

Thus, if you are between 25-35 years old, you have the opportunity to future, younger lungs.  You see, participants in such studies are the superheroes behind medical research.  See more information at this reliable online resource.

And do not worry, we are not trying to recruit you.  However, we do wish to inform you of the opportunities and admirable goals of this Lung Cohort Research Study.

It is unusual for us to report on upcoming lung research studies, but this one will be very valuable. And we have always stated that practical medicine and research medicine go hand in glove.
